The Funniest Colleges and Universities in America With Hilarious Alumni

Get your laughs at the funniest colleges and universities in the country! They embrace comedy and have graduated many famous comedians you know and love.

When you’re paying $25,000+ a year for your education, sometimes you need to laugh to keep from crying. Maybe that’s why college seems to be the place where so many of our funniest citizens get their start. It really got us wondering: What are the funniest campuses? We have lists for the most stressful colleges and the most accepting schools, but what about the places you can get a good laugh beyond your chemistry professor’s periodic table puns?

For all these reasons, we spent far more time and research than is probably appropriate to research this list of the funniest colleges in the country! And by that we mean the schools that seem to have a preternatural gift for churning out the funniest people by offering the funniest environments. Here are the results:

Top 10 funniest colleges

  1. New York University
  2. University of California, Los Angeles
  3. University of Southern California
  4. Northwestern University
  5. Columbia University
  6. Yale University
  7. Cornell University
  8. Harvard University
  9. Emerson College
  10. California Institute of the Arts (tied for 10th)
  11. Carnegie Mellon University (tied for 10th)

Other rather amusing schools

The #1 school, New York University, wasn’t exactly the biggest surprise since they’re located in the epicenter of comedy. But they still won by a landslide (sorry, UCLA). They certainly earned it, having given us the likes of Billy Crystal, Andy Samberg, Aziz Ansari, Neil Simon, and two sets of funny twins: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Dylan and Cole Sprouse.

You can learn about the other schools' famous alumni by viewing our official Funniest Colleges list. (If a school has a green "Connect me" button, you can click it to request information from the school quickly and easily!)

How did we come up with this list?

A lot of it’s based on the alma maters of the funniest people in and behind your favorite comedies, including comedians, the show runners for the top comedy TV shows and movies, and Emmy Award winners and nominees for writing and acting in comedy. But we also gave points for colleges with comedic extracurriculars on campus, like improv groups and humor publications. We even interpolated our list of schools for fun-loving students. Then we narrowed down 1,162 entries to the ones you see here.

We hope you enjoyed our list of the nation’s funniest colleges, bastions of everything from the sharpest political satire to admittedly less sharp (one would hope) poop jokes. They may not be able to teach you how to be funny, but they’re not a bad place to start. At the very least, you'll have a good chance of listening to a hilarious commencement speaker when you graduate.

CollegeXpress has provided me with tips that were for college students, but as a high school junior, they were still very useful. Not only that, it also gave me an idea of what to expect when it comes to going to college or already being in college. I want to say thank you to CollegeXpress, and I hope you continue the wonderful tips until I hopefully get into college and throughout my college journey.

As I transition to furthering my education, I can say with certainty that it simply wouldn’t be possible without the help of generous organizations such as CollegeXpress. Those who initially founded CX had no idea their platform would give a plethora of information to a first-generation homeless kid native to the ghettos of over half a dozen states. Everyone at CX and Carnegie Dartlet gave me a chance at a future when the statistics said I had none. And for that, I thank them.

This whole website has helped me overcome the attitude I had before. I was scared to even approach the thought of college because it was so much. I knew it wasn’t just a few easy steps, and I panicked mostly, instead of actually trying. Without realizing it, CollegeXpress did exactly what I usually do when I panic, which is take it one step at a time. With college I forget that because it’s more than just a small to-do list, but this website was really helpful and overall amazing. So thank you!

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships for the colleges I applied to. It was very hard for me to find scholarships in the beginning that I was qualified for. My teachers recommended this website to find some, and not only did I find some scholarships but I also got to look into some schools I hadn’t heard of before. I was very happy to have discovered this website, especially with the coronavirus spreading all over as I can’t really go visit many colleges.

Student, University of the People

I registered with CollegeXpress and filled all my necessary and relevant information as well as the course I wished to study. A few days later, an email was sent to me with a list of schools offering the course; amongst them was the University of the People, the school I got admitted to.
