Sexy University Ad Causes Stir

Jan   2015

Is this recruitment ad for the University of Moncton (Université de Moncton) too . . . sexy?

Besides actually featuring a couple kissing rather passionately in a school library, the ad has a slick, glossy, commercial look, to be sure. It’s full of attractive young people, some of which are engaging in research and computing math equations. Others are frolicking on the beach and giving coy over-the-shoulder glances. Not necessarily what you’d expect for an academic establishment in New Brunswick, Canada—though perhaps what you might want to see as a potential student.

Inside Higher Ed reports that school administrators and even students object to the video’s Hollywood portrayal of the University, the largest Francophone school in Canada outside Quebec. President of the University’s Professors' and Librarians' Association Marie-Noëlle Ryan called the ad “pathetic,” comparing it to commercials in far less esteemed industries. "It's like selling the University, like it's a beer product,” she said. “And it's not that way that you will recruit serious students and people who really want to learn and have good diplomas."

The ad’s voiceover is in French, but you don’t have to speak the language to get the gist! Take a look and let us know what you think of the ad in the comments below.
