Gone are the days of registering for the SAT by visiting your guidance counselor. Today, you can register online and no one, not even your parents may ever know. This is good in that it allows you to take on a certain responsibility for your future, but it can be detrimental if you make decisions like this in a vacuum. Get advice from your parents, teachers, and guidance counselor.

There are a number of questions you should be asking yourself before you register for the test.

  • What schools am I interested in attending and what are the SAT/ACT scores they require for acceptance?
  • When am I going to take a practice SAT? It’s important to know your initial score on a real SAT test.
  • Based on my practice SAT score, how many points do I need to increase to meet admissions requirements at my favorite schools?

Your answers to these questions will help you determine how much time and effort you need to put into preparation for the test. Don’t register to take the SAT unless you know when you’ll be ready to perform your best. Selecting a test date is an important decision. Hopefully you haven’t put off thinking about this decision until your senior year. If so, there’s still time to prepare, but you’re going to have to really work hard and quickly.
