Transfer to Hofstra University—a Move in the Right Direction
Hofstra University is the largest private college on Long Island, with nearly 11,000 students from 46 US states and territories and 67 countries. Students live, study, and play on a beautiful, state-of-the-art campus that is only a short commute to New York City. Our 240-acre campus is a nationally recognized arboretum with both modern and traditional ivy-covered buildings that house 21st-century research and instructional facilities—all just minutes from the networking opportunities, internship experiences, and cultural offerings of a bustling metropolis.
Best of both worlds
Hofstra offers the resources and advantages of a large university but the atmosphere of a small college. With an average undergraduate class size of 21 and a student-faculty ratio of 13:1, students benefit from easy access to their professors. You’ll get to know your professors, and they’ll get to know you. Ninety-two percent of our full-time faculty hold the highest degree attainable in their field. Hofstra professors are Guggenheim Fellows and Fulbright scholars; Emmy Award recipients; prize-winning scientists; CEOs; and leaders in education, health professions, politics, and government.
At Hofstra you will have endless opportunities for prestigious experiential learning on and off campus: conduct research with a distinguished professor; intern with top-tier companies in finance, media, publishing, or theater, or with the state legislature or Congress; or work in our cutting-edge facilities such as the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, which has 34 Bloomberg terminals, or WRHU 88.7 FM, Radio Hofstra University, which was named the top college radio station in the country by The Princeton Review and also won the National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Award as the top noncommercial station in the United States. You can also participate in the School of Engineering and Applied Science’s co-op program, where you will gain invaluable real-world experience at a top technology firm.
Pride and purpose
Our students roll up their sleeves and make things happen. You will be encouraged to grow academically, as well as personally, through community service, leadership development, cultural and social exploration, study abroad, and internships on Long Island and in Manhattan. Since its founding in 1935, Hofstra has evolved into an internationally renowned university that continues to achieve recognition as an institution of academic excellence. Hofstra is consistently recognized on the “Best College” lists of U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review, Fiske, Washington Monthly, and Forbes.
Hofstra was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for seven consecutive years, and more than 1,000 of our students served as volunteers when Hofstra hosted US presidential debates in 2008 and 2012.
At Hofstra “pride and purpose” means celebrating our history and traditions while challenging ourselves, individually and collectively, to use our talents to make our campus, our community, and our world a better place.
A program meant for you
Hofstra students choose from about 155 undergraduate program options in Humanities; Fine and Performing Arts; Mathematics and Natural Sciences; Government, Public Policy, and International Affairs; Health Professions and Human Services; Business; Communication; Education; and Engineering and Applied Science. Additionally, Hofstra offers honors studies as well as more than 100 dual-degree program options that give you the opportunity to earn both a graduate and undergraduate degree in less time than if each degree was pursued separately—which could save you the cost of one or more semesters of tuition.
Much more than academics
Hofstra’s vibrant campus is home to 35 residence halls, 18 eateries, six theaters, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an accredited museum, and world-class libraries that contain over one million print volumes and provide 24/7 online access to more than 75,000 full-text journals and 160,000 electronic books. Our residence halls include themed housing options, which give students the opportunity to live with other students who share similar interests and passions.
Hofstra hosts hundreds of social, academic, and cultural events each year, drawing together scholars, business leaders, authors, celebrities, health care professionals, politicians, and journalists from across the nation and around the world. These events help foster the connection between in-classroom work and real-world events.
In addition, Hofstra offers 17 intercollegiate athletic programs that compete at the NCAA Division I level and more than 200 academic, media, multicultural, performance, pre-professional, religious, social, social/political, and sports clubs and organizations, including 28 national and local fraternities and sororities.
The David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, a 93,000-sq. ft. facility, is home to the Hofstra Pride men’s and women’s basketball teams and wrestling, and is also the site for events such as commencements, exhibitions, trade shows, televised political events, and concerts.
We make transferring easy for you
We value the credits you’ve earned at another institution, and we have maximized the transferability of your credits. To simplify the transfer process, we give our students greater flexibility in fulfilling general education requirements with previously completed course work. Generally, courses in which you’ve received at least a “C-” grade may be transferred to Hofstra. Usually if a course you’ve taken at another institution is comparable to a course offered at Hofstra, you will receive credit.
While we consider transfer candidates on a rolling basis, we encourage you to apply early, especially if you’re interested in on-campus housing and available scholarships. A formal credit evaluation is completed after acceptance and prior to registration. And, of course, we offer comprehensive academic advising prior to course registration as well as throughout your Hofstra experience.
