Catholic Profile

Known for its strong academic programs and sense of community, Gannon University is preparing graduates for the world of the 21st century through committed faculty, personal attention, and real-world experience. A university rich in history and tradition, coupled with a commitment to the future, Gannon University prepares our students to be leaders in their fields.

Founded in 1925, Gannon University is dedicated to a tradition of values-centered education. Consistently cited as one of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S.News & World Report, Gannon enrolls 4,211 students and maintains a low 14:1 student-faculty ratio, providing students with accessible faculty, a high level of individual attention, and greater opportunities for academic, spiritual, personal, and professional growth.

Majors and degrees
Gannon offers over 60 undergraduate degrees, most of which integrate hands-on experience outside the classroom. Those degrees are offered through The Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences; the College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences; and the College of Engineering and Business.

The humanities and social science programs at Gannon offer a broad range of majors, from advertising communications to social work. New facilities have opened in 2014 and 2015 to deepen the University’s commitment to enriching the student experience and to enhance learning. A new School of Communication and the Arts has been created to co-locate and integrate current and emerging programs in human communication studies, media studies, and the digital and performing arts. For students in the criminal justice program, a new Forensic Investigation Center delivers outstanding educational, research, and professional training opportunities for students and/or current professionals. This innovative learning facility looks like an actual family dwelling, but it is really a “working laboratory” where students practice the skills they’ve learned in the classroom to find evidence and solve crimes.

Education majors participate in three to five field experiences as early as their second semester. These experiences complement the teaching strategies shared in the classroom.

The Dahlkemper School of Business Administration at Gannon offers some of the most unique programs in the region, such as entrepreneurship or risk management. Starting with the fall semester of 2015, new programs in healthcare management and supply chain management will be offered for student interested in pursuing a career in business. Business students also have the opportunity to remain at Gannon and complete their Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) with just one extra year of study.

A landmark building in the heart of Erie’s central business district has been transformed by Gannon University into a Center for Business Ingenuity that houses the University’s College of Engineering and Business, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Erie Technology Incubator (ETI), creating a setting for collaboration between regional businesses and University students and faculty.

Gannon students are fortunate to be able to choose from one of the many unique program offerings within the School of Engineering and Business or the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences.

If your career interest lies in health care, Gannon offers degrees in several of the most sought-after professions in the industry. For students interested in becoming a physician assistant or an occupational therapist, Gannon offers five-year direct-entry master’s degree programs in both areas. Students who are interested in physical therapy can remain at Gannon after their undergraduate years to obtain a doctoral degree in physical therapy—a program that currently boasts a 100% job placement rate. Gannon also offers a 3+3 accelerated Doctor of Physical Therapy, allowing students to earn a degree in six years rather than seven.

Gannon is also proud to offer degree programs in some unique areas: respiratory care, radiologic sciences, sport and exercise science, nutrition and human performance, and medical technology. The Robert H. Morosky Academic Center offers students the latest in classrooms and labs and includes our new, state-of-the-art Patient Simulation Center. In addition to health care options, students may major in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, forensic science, freshwater and marine biology, mathematics and science. Gannon has a tremendous success rate of students progressing to dental, medical, pharmacy, and veterinary school.
Because of Gannon’s strong ties with regional industry, students who attend Gannon and major in one of our engineering fields have the opportunity to work on solutions for real design and manufacturing challenges through internships and co-op placements. Gannon’s programs in electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineering are approved by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). Gannon also offers a computer software concentration in electrical engineering. Industrial engineering and biomedical engineering are Gannon’s newest engineering programs, featuring new lab space and laboratory equipment in the Center for Advanced Engineering. The biomedical engineering field is considered one of the top growing employment areas in the nation.

The Computer and Information Science Department at Gannon offers a wide variety of programming environments and application software. As a computer science or information systems major, you will be able to utilize many core environments through the program’s course offerings. Software engineering is an accredited program within this department. Gannon also houses one of the largest educational computer facilities in the area, and all academic buildings are wireless.
