Mercyhurst University is a comprehensive, private Catholic university located in Erie, Pennsylvania—the state’s only Great Lakes city. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1926, the University is a beautiful 75-acre expanse located on a hill overlooking Erie. The historical entrance gates and stately Old Main are two of Erie’s major landmarks.
Academic excellence and hands-on experience
At Mercyhurst you’ll learn more about yourself, about others, and about the world. Mercyhurst is a leader in higher education, integrating excellence in the liberal arts with professional and career programs, and service to regional and world communities. The University continues to educate young men and women where faith and reason flourish together, where the beauty and power of the liberal arts combine with the appreciation of the dignity of work and a commitment to serving others.
Mercyhurst offers more than 100 academic majors, minors, and concentrations, including the following majors in science, health, and medicine: athletic training, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, exercise science, pre-dental, pre-medicine, pre-occupational therapy, pre-pharmacy, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant, pre-veterinary, public health, and sports medicine. The University’s internationally renowned programs in anthropology, archaeology, and applied forensic sciences provide students with outstanding experiential learning unique to Mercyhurst. The Applied Forensic Sciences Department prides itself on being one of the only programs in the country that provides students opportunities to work with real evidence and human remains.
Mercyhurst University is known around the region and the world for its high-quality academics and outstanding faculty. Many of our professors are known as experts in their respective fields. Furthermore, while professors at larger universities are researching instead of teaching, the faculty at Mercyhurst involve themselves with teaching, advising, and research (and most times they engage undergraduate students in such projects). Mercyhurst has made a significant commitment that all students, regardless of their major, will participate in real-world, outside the classroom, hands-on experiences prior to graduation.
Mercyhurst University believes that a lot of a student’s learning is done outside of the classroom—via clubs and organizations, athletics, performing arts, and more. Our vibrant student life program allows students the opportunity to get involved the moment they arrive. The University offers more than 80 Recognized Student Clubs and Organizations (RSCOs) on campus, including Ambassadors, Amnesty International, Diversity 101, Green Team, Merciad student newspaper, Mercyhurst Student Government (MSG), Senior Annual Yearbook, Student Activities Council, and many more.
Mercyhurst offers 24 athletic programs, including two NCAA Division I sports in men’s and women’s ice hockey, and 22 Division II sports. The College’s women’s ice hockey team is consistently ranked in the top five in the nation and advanced to the Frozen Four in 2008, 2009, and 2012. Additionally, our men’s lacrosse program won the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship and advanced to the championship game in 2013. Varsity athletics are not the only outlet for students, as Mercyhurst offers a wide range of intramural and other recreational activities.
Known for its quality programs, trusted reputation, outstanding facilities, and excellent faculty, Mercyhurst University graduates have been very successful in securing employment in their respective fields. More than 95% of graduates have either gained employment or have been accepted into graduate, medical, or professional schools. Also, our graduation rate has been recognized as one of the best in the country.
To date, more than 15,000 Mercyhurst alumni reside in all 50 states and in 15 countries across the globe. The University’s worldwide network of graduates includes the finest leaders, teachers, doctors, lawyers, police officers, FBI and CIA analysts, dancers, musicians, artists, and more.
