Undergrad Profile

In 1855, the University of Iowa became the first public university in the country to admit women and men on an equal basis. Thus began Iowa’s heritage of leadership, establishing the commitment to serving every student that guides the institution to this day.

The University of Iowa provides an engaging, interdisciplinary learning environment that encourages exploration, critical thinking, and creativity. Expert faculty members work directly alongside undergraduates on projects and research, helping Hawkeyes gain crucial, hands-on skills in their desired fields.

This student-centered approach has made Iowa an academic powerhouse in the arts and scientific research alike. With the world-renowned Iowa Writers Workshop and one of the most highly acclaimed academic hospitals in the country, Iowa stands at the forefront of classic liberal arts institutions.

Finding new voices
Iowa may be known worldwide for the Iowa Writers Workshop, the #1 creative writing program in the country, but creativity in every form has a place at Iowa. Talented faculty and students—musicians, dancers, and actors alike—have made Iowa City a vibrant artistic community unlike any other. Accomplished performers and authors from around the globe come to Iowa as instructors, meaning students can meet and even work with inspiring masters of their craft.

Teaching tomorrow’s leaders
For today’s entrepreneurs and executives, “big picture” thinking and the ability to see problems from every angle are essential to success. Hawkeyes are free to create their own academic path and explore their interests, expanding their horizons. Pairing this interdisciplinary approach with the support of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, Iowa has helped set the stage for many promising student ventures and future business leaders.

Building the future
At Iowa, students learn how to work together to address the world’s most challenging problems. The College of Engineering, for example, does away with the typical “weed out” classes and competitive grading, offering a friendly, high-quality experience complete with Big Ten resources. Every Hawkeye enjoys a supportive, cooperative environment that allows them to make close, lasting connections with their instructors and fellow students.

Making a difference
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been ranked among America’s best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for 26 consecutive years—but Iowa’s health care facilities are far more than an amazing resource for patients. They provide a place for students to learn and work on the cutting edge of medicine. As undergraduates students will interact with patients, contribute to the pioneering research being done at Iowa, and gain invaluable professional skills that set them apart.
