Undergrad Profile

Centenary College, located in historic Hackettstown, New Jersey, has a rich history spanning nearly 150 years.

Established in 1867, Centenary has grown into a groundbreaking liberal arts college with a strong career focus. We are committed to our students, and our collaborative approach to learning has helped us become one of America’s most trusted private colleges.

Centenary believes a college education is an investment in your future. Many families assume a private education is simply out of reach for them financially. Not at Centenary. We make a private, personal education affordable. In fact, students receive an average of $22,000 per year in grants and academic scholarships!

When we talk about a “collaborative approach,” we mean it. We are committed to providing you with the best financial aid package possible to help you experience a rewarding college education with a strong focus on value.

Our Financial Aid Counselors work with families every step of the way, one-on-one. Each spring we host a number of financial aid consultations. Families who attend these events leave with a more clear understanding on the entire financial aid process as a whole. We help each family see what the next four years will look like. This way, one can easily realize the value not just for the first year but over the course of four years.

Centenary offers first-time and transfer students a wide range of academic programs. We boast 49 career-focused programs of study, including highly innovative programs like social media marketing, fashion, criminal justice, and pre-veterinary. Our solid liberal arts foundation builds students’ skills in analysis, evaluation, and communication.

The student-faculty ratio at Centenary College is 17:1, and the majority of our classes have fewer than 20 students. Students are more than just a number here; they are a member of a small, devoted community of learners.

Our dedicated faculty, administration, and staff make it their responsibility to help each and every student get the most out of their Centenary experience. Our intimate class sizes allow for our professors to connect students to a wide variety of subjects that relate directly to their personal interests.

Centenary faculty members include Fulbright Scholars and other nationally recognized academicians, but they are also practitioners who apply their specialized knowledge in fascinating and productive ways.

Students can study psychology with a professor who directs a substance abuse research team or with a sports management professor who spent two decades with the New Jersey Devils hockey club. Their equine management professor will be able to share insights from managing the Garden State Horse Show.

Commitment to your success
Our Career Development Center, located right on campus, matches students with internships that will prepare them for their dream career. The career staff helps students with everything from mock interviews to graduate school applications to LinkedIn account creation and résumé drafting. In fact, 82% of our graduates found employment within nine months of graduating!

Student life
College isn’t just about academics; it’s about having a great time, expanding your horizons, and developing meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. Our goal is to encourage an appreciation and participation in service learning, and allow students to design and create programs and activities on campus to make their college experience their own. One thing is for sure, there’s never a dull moment at Centenary!

Our Student Activities Department strives to enrich students’ collegiate experiences through weekly events and programs that reach our diverse audience. There are a number of fun clubs to choose from, ranging from intramurals to fraternities and sororities to honor societies to service groups.

Centenary College teams participate in 14 NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, equestrian, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and wrestling, while women’s sports include basketball, cross-country, equestrian, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and volleyball.

Equestrian program
Centenary is one of the most well-known equestrian colleges in the country. We have one of the top nationally ranked equestrian riding teams in the United States. Students enrolled in the College’s equine programs may participate in competitions through intercollegiate organizations such as the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, the Intercollegiate Dressage Association, or with the Hunter/Jumper Club.
