Diversity Profile

Founded in 1857, Upper Iowa University (UIU) is a private, not-for-profit university providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs to students—nationally and internationally—at its Fayette campus and 25 U.S. education locations, as well as locations in Malaysia, Hong Kong, and soon Vietnam.

Whether a new high school graduate, non-traditional student, or member of the U.S. military, UIU strives to meet each individual’s needs with convenient daytime, evening, and weekend classes. With flexibility and a commitment to high standards and quality, Upper Iowa’s unique academic year consists of eight-week terms. Students usually take one to two courses most terms and still graduate on schedule.

Online classes can also be added to allow a student to aggressively work toward a degree. Many students blend their degree plan by taking hybrid (both face-to-face and online) courses. Other incoming students easily transfer up to 90 college credits from other schools. Up to 12 credits can also be transferred at the graduate level. Additional credits may also be earned through an individual’s work experience through an experiential learning portfolio or various college examinations.

The UIU Center for International Education (CIE) is responsible for all initiatives related to internationalizing the campus. About 11% of students on the Fayette campus are international, representing 28 countries. The CIE includes education abroad, international admission, Intensive English Program, and International Student and Scholar Services to help international students with immigration and cultural adjustment.

Campus sports and activities
UIU students are provided a variety of athletics, wellness programs, and other activities to participate in throughout the school year.

The Upper Iowa University Peacocks are the only NCAA Division II college or university in Iowa, with student-athletes participating in 15 varsity teams, including soccer, golf, and basketball for both women and men; softball, tennis, cross-country, track & field, and volleyball for women; and football, baseball, and wrestling for men. A competitive co-ed spirit squad is also available.

Among the popular activities available to all students is a full slate of intramurals, including flag football, billiards, basketball, softball, and volleyball leagues as well as bocce ball, disc golf, kickball, bowling, bean bag(s), indoor soccer, and ladder golf tournaments. At the same time, UIU’s Outdoor Pursuits schedule includes fishing, camping, paintball, skiing, white-water rafting, and much more. Outdoor Pursuits also provides various equipment for students to check out at no cost. In addition, UIU recognizes approximately 30 student groups, organizations, and club sports.

Making it affordable
Assistance comes in three forms at Upper Iowa University: gift aid (grants or scholarships), loans, and/or work opportunities. The University offers renewable merit to incoming freshmen at the Fayette campus. In addition, Upper Iowa awards more than $100,000 each year to its current students who are selected by a committee. In addition to providing career development, counseling, service learning, and similar assistance to students, the UIU financial aid team, along with personal admission counselors, work with all students to develop a financial aid package that makes attending UIU affordable.
