Clinical counseling psychology The only M.A. in the United States incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy throughout the entire
The clinical counseling psychology program is recognized by experts in the field as one of the best in the nation for training skilled, effective clinicians and is the only program in the United States incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy throughout the entire curriculum. The program is designed to prepare graduates to meet the educational requirements for licensure as a mental health counselor in Massachusetts and most other states. Graduates of the program fill a need for counselors with evidence-based practice experience.
Qualified students can apply for generous graduate fellowships with 30 credits of tuition remission, and the program can be completed in two years. Sought-after practicums in Worcester, a city renowned for health care, are key components of the program. Four electives provide students with the flexibility to develop a depth of knowledge in their areas of specialization. Optional concentrations are available in cognitive behavioral therapies or child and family interventions. A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.) is also available.
Courses are taught by experienced faculty members who bring extensive, real-world clinical experience to the classroom and who are committed to fostering students’ development as mental health professionals. The small class sizes improve interaction and learning.
The Aaron T. Beck Institute for Cognitive Studies is affiliated with the program and offers lectures and workshops featuring nationally renowned expert speakers.
A nationally ranked and flexible program
The rehabilitation counseling program is ranked among the top programs in the nation by U.S.News & World Report and is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE). The program develops leaders in the field using a multidisciplinary approach. Students are prepared to become nationally certified rehabilitation counselors, entering a profession that offers abundant opportunities and personal fulfillment. Graduates of the program are aggressively recruited by agencies within New England and across the country.
The M.A. is offered on campus and online, offering flexibility for students. Students participate in a unique real-world internship experience, mastering a comprehensive set of skills, knowledge, and competencies and then putting those skills into practice in actual rehabilitation settings under the supervision of a professional rehabilitation counselor. There is an opportunity for specialization in areas such as vocational rehabilitation, psychiatric rehabilitation, youth in transition, substance abuse and addiction, and working with veterans with disabilities. A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies is also available.
The rehabilitation counseling faculty are a premier group of educators who offer a rich blend of practical experience and professional accomplishment. Students benefit from a supportive environment, high-quality instruction, and small and interactive classes, backed by an almost 50-year legacy of success.
A curriculum that exceeds state and national standards
The profession of school counseling is in the process of a profound transformation in theory and practice. Assumption offers an innovative and integrated curriculum to prepare students to take part in this exciting new professional identity. The curriculum includes a strong counseling core that exceeds state and national standards and has an emphasis on positive psychology, mindfulness-based practices, and resiliency interventions.
The program is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to license school guidance counselors (Initial Licensure PreK-8 or 5-12) and school social worker/adjustment counselors (Initial Licensure All Levels). The flexible program schedule meets the needs of full- and part-time students. Full-time students can complete the M.A. program in just two years.
A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies provides specialized knowledge and skills in specific areas for those students who already possess a master’s degree. A combined M.A. and C.A.G.S. in School Counseling leads to dual licensing, and a new C.A.G.S. in Resiliency and Resiliency Certificate offers a first-of-its-kind program that addresses the needs of both school counselors and their students.
The faculty have extensive school and counseling experience, and the uniquely collaborative learning environment nurtures interaction and teamwork. Innovative pre-practicum and practicum placements in urban and suburban school districts are available at over 75 sites. Students also have access to creative, practical learning experiences with professional school counselors through Assumption’s Institute for School Counseling and School Psychology.
A rigorous, comprehensive program modeled on Massachusetts DESE guidelines
The special education program bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing students with knowledge that is proven to be effective in the classroom. Students establish a foundation for success with a rigorous, comprehensive program modeled on the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidelines. Graduates enter careers in a high-need area and benefit from consistently high employment rates.
Students of the program may become eligible for Initial or Professional Licensure. They are consistent achievers on the Massachusetts Test for Educator License (MTEL) and learn practical, cutting-edge techniques from instructors who are expert teachers, administrators, and counselors in local school systems. Students receive mentoring throughout the program with systematic monitoring of progress by faculty and practicum supervisors.
In addition to the M.A., a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Positive Behavior Support is available for school professionals who hold a master’s degree. This program teaches specialized skills that allow school professionals to spend more time teaching and less time disciplining, becoming experts in behavioral management.
Qualified students participate in a field-based pre-practicum and practicum or performance assessment, providing the means by which they establish their competence as special educators in accordance with state licensure regulations.

M.B.A. students can focus their study in several areas of concentration, including accounting, finance/economics, human resources, international business, management, marketing, and nonprofit leadership. The program offers a full-time Early Career Track for recent college graduates, which can be completed in 12–14 months. A Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies is also available.
Faculty take pride in providing personal attention to students’ course work and career planning and success. They are all expert practitioners who are deeply devoted to teaching, and all have one or more degrees in business, the majority of which are terminal degrees.
