— Dr. Penny Jennings, MA in Social and Public Policy

“Empire State College offers rigorous, challenging graduate courses. It’s a wonderful option for students with demanding schedules and little opportunity to attend brick and mortar classrooms.”
— Sally Speed, MA in Adult Learning

“Empire State College does a perfect job of weaving together what I want to do with my life and the curriculum…and allows you to work wherever you are in the world.”
— Jason Torreano, MA in Liberal Studies

As part of the State University of New York (SUNY), Empire State College was founded in 1971 to provide the opportunity for students to earn a college degree without taking classes at a set time and place. The innovative founders sought to open up learning in ways that fit the lives of active, independent adult learners. The College’s mission, then as it is now, is to be flexible, innovative, and creative and to offer students the opportunity to earn a high-quality degree while working, raising a family, serving their communities, or following other pursuits.

Empire State College includes an alumni family of 73,000 and growing—many of whom stay connected and are actively engaged in the College and its mission. Graduates have distinguished themselves in every imaginable area, from the arts to business, technology, politics, human services, the military, teaching, public service, communications, and beyond.

About the School for Graduate Studies
The graduate programs provide students with the opportunity not only to compete in a rapidly changing economy, but to contribute to a rapidly changing world. Courses are taught online with personal guidance and continuing interaction with experienced faculty. Some programs include limited residencies, regional meetings, or other face-to-face activities, giving students additional opportunities for engagement.

Master’s degrees and advanced certificates
Each graduate program is designed to connect theory and practice and to develop an understanding of what is and what could be. Degrees and certificates span policy studies, business administration, teaching, adult learning, liberal studies, and emerging technologies.

All of Empire State College’s graduate programs are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In addition, the MBA in Management is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), and the MAT holds accreditation from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC).

Empire State College offers over 20 advanced certificate programs that can stand alone or be integrated into a master’s degree program. Some certificates have additional endorsements. For example, the advanced certificate in Project Management is recognized by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and meets PMI’s rigorous quality criteria for course content, instructor qualification, and instructional design. Empire State College is recognized as a Registered Education Provider (REP) by PMI.

Building expertise
Certificate programs give students the opportunity to build expertise in a particular area. They are offered online, designed to provide focused study to support a particular career interest, and can be incorporated into a related master’s degree for those meeting the program admission requirements. This option allows students to earn a second credential in addition to their master’s degree.

Transfer credit and credit for demonstrated knowledge
Students may transfer up to nine credits into master’s programs and up to three credits into advanced certificate programs. Several master’s degrees offer the opportunity to gain credit through demonstration of graduate-level knowledge. The MBA in Management and the MBA in Healthcare Leadership provide an assessment process for students during their first term of enrollment. The MA in Adult Learning utilizes prior learning assessment to determine graduate-level credit. Students do not pay tuition on any credits earned through assessments.

Graduate student resources
Studying online doesn’t have to mean studying alone. Empire State College provides many resources for graduate students to keep connected, get assistance, and have convenient access to the resources needed to aid in their success.

The Graduate Student Collaborative connects students with each other and their professors in an online space to exchange ideas, network, collaborate on research, and share knowledge.

The Online Library provides specific resources used by graduate students in their research. Librarians are available online to assist students. They also schedule multiple workshops on research and citing.

The office of Disability Services offers all students with disabilities an equal opportunity for success in their college experience. The College’s goal is to provide equal access to all College services, studies, programs, and activities.

College-wide Career Services are available to all current students and alumni.
