New Mexico Hidden Gems

Think you know every college out there? Think again. Here are some diamonds in the rough from The Land of Enchantment.

  • New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (Socorro, NM): A great small school with very reasonable tuition, NMT provides an excellent education in engineering and research opportunities for math and science majors, thanks to a huge amount of government grant money. Lots of personal attention is available, which is good, because although the school is fairly easy to get into, it can be harder to stay.
  • Santa Fe University of Art and Design (Santa Fe, NM): New Mexico has become a major hub of the film industry lately, and CSF has tapped into that, with nationally ranked programs in film and the performing and visual arts (although it also offers some non-art majors). The college is not pricey and has superb facilities--even a sound stage!--but is still weak on housing and campus life.
