Presbyterian College (Clinton, SC): Located in a quiet small town between Columbia and Greenville, this small private college offers great personal attention and has boosted many students into business, law, and medical school. The college is a new Division I NCAA member (2007), which will have a significant effect on sports and campus enthusiasm.
The Citadel (Charleston, SC): Though infamous because of Pat Conroy's novel The Lords of Discipline and the process of going coed ten years ago, this state military college offers exceptional personal attention and structure as well as excellent academics in engineering, business, education, and liberal arts. Students are all military but are not required to sign a contract. The Citadel has good Division I sports competition.
Winthrop University (Rock Hill, SC): This medium-size state university offers excellent programs in business (close to major internships in Charlotte, N.C.), education, and fine arts. It is one of those second-tier state institutions that have benefited immensely from the growth of state funding and enrollment.
