College of the Atlantic—Islands Through Time

Students enrolled in this intensive precollege program explore the relationship between humans and the environment. ITT begins with an introduction to the ecology, the history and the culture of the Maine coast, taught from an interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates marine biology, oceanography, anthropology and literature. Boys and girls conduct marine research at island field stations; learn the basics of navigation, steering and ship handling aboard a research vessel; examine the lives of coastal Maine residents; and work on their reading and writing skills with college faculty. At the conclusion of the program, pupils work in teams on multimedia presentations that detail their experiences.
