New York Military Academy—New Traditions Jazz Program

Advanced middle school instrumentalists join high school musicians of all ability levels in this two-week program that focuses on jazz study and performance (in solo and small-group settings). The curriculum addresses three main areas: bebop and post bop, modal music, and avant-garde and ethereal styles. Private lessons and classes on improvisation, music theory and listening reinforce small-group playing. Ensembles perform weekly in a forum setting, and the program culminates in a final performance. Students may also participate in master classes and attend concerts with faculty and guest artists.
