The fall semester is just a few short weeks away, and that can only mean one thing: the beginning of college football season. And for a handful of University of Iowa students, the thrill of cheering on their team isn’t the only thing they’ll have to look forward to. The school recently announced that five current students who purchase season tickets by this coming Friday, August 1, will win free tuition for the upcoming academic year.
Students received an e-mail from the school this past Monday informing them that 11 prizes will be awarded to randomly selected students who purchase season ticket passes. In addition to the five grand prizes of free tuition, the school is also giving away $500 in free books, an away game viewing party, and four $1,000 gift cards to Hy-Vee (a regional grocery store). The free tuition prizes will be based on the in-state rate, which is around $8,000.
As if that wasn’t enough to push school spirit to an all-time high, the e-mail also listed some special game day activities and prizes the school has planned for students, such as music, games, body painting, and free food and other giveaways.
“We are acting on the feedback we’ve received directly from students,” said Lisa Pearson, director of marketing for the school’s Athletics Department. “They’ve told us they want to have some fun with their friends before the games and during the games . . . so we’re providing that opportunity in addition to an opportunity to cheer on a football program that is coming off an eight-win season and an invitation to another January 1 bowl game.”
Update: Shortly after posting this piece, we learned that the University of Iowa had temporarily suspended the promotion as it worked to ensure that they were in compliance with the state's gambling laws. We're happy to report that the contest is back on, and now students who do not purchase tickets are also eligible to win!
