You know about all the standard scholarships, but take a look at those you haven't heard of before. You might be surprised at what you'll find.
Most everyone is familiar with the standard scholarships: university-specific awards, recognition for high SAT or ACT scores, etc. But what about the lesser-known scholarships? How do you even know what to look for? You could be sitting on a talent or characteristic right now that you don’t even realize can earn you free money for college. The following are only a few such suggestions. Open your mind, look at yourself, and you’re bound to track down many more strange and unique scholarships.
Scholarship for left-handed students
If you’re left-handed, you’re in the minority. Statistics indicate that only 10%–11% of the population is left-handed. Juniata College of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania awards a $1,000 scholarship for left-handed Juaniata students on a yearly basis. Strange? Possibly, but also true!
The duct tape scholarship
Ok, it’s actually not called that, but the Duck Brand Duct Tape’s Stuck at Prom Contest is an opportunity to win up to $3,000 to fund your college education. All you need to do is design your own prom dress or tuxedo out of your choice of duct tape colors, submit the short application on their website, and you’ll be entered to win. It’s a great way to let your artistic side show for sure.
Work at McDonald’s, earn money for college
You may think of your after-school job at McDonald’s as nothing more than a way to earn a little extra cash for movies, shopping, and road trips with your buddies, but it can also do much more for you. Every year, McDonald’s selects one exceptional student-employee from each state and Washington, D.C., to win a $1,000 scholarship. As a McDonald’s employee and student, all you need to do is apply!
Milk: It does an education good
Growing up, your parents probably encouraged you to drink your milk with supper. Maybe you didn’t think much of it at the time, other than the fact that it was cool and refreshing and went well with your meal. Now it also has the ability to earn you money for college! Check out the Scholar-Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Awards from Body By Milk. To qualify, you must be a student-athlete and write a short essay describing how milk has impacted your life. Applicants will be entered to win $7,500 for college.
Earn money for your height
Tall Clubs International, a social organization for women 5’10” and above and men 6’2” and above, awards yearly scholarships of up to $1,000 to members who are under 21 years of age. If you’re feeling left out because you don’t meet the criteria, there’s bound to be a scholarship for short people—or even average-sized people—out there somewhere.
