Defy the ordinary
We take strong academic programs, add bright minds, stir things up a bit, and serve the world. And we’re uncommonly good at it.

You’re looking for a college. You’ve worked hard to get to this point. Now you wonder: how will you know which college is right for you?

Many colleges and universities may look or feel the same. They lack that ideal “fit.” Defiance College will give you an experience that defies the ordinary, where you’ll grow t hrough outstanding academics in a liberal arts environment, top-notch faculty who care about you, and remarkable learning experiences that connect the classroom to the real world.

Extraordinary academics
Your successful college journey begins with solid academics and intellectual growth. Defiance gives students the opportunity to put an individual stamp on their education. Our students engage in relevant research programs that rarely happen before graduate school. They present at state and national conferences and campus symposia and create capstone projects that represent a deeper understanding of their academic accomplishments.

Defiance’s professors are known for the energy and individual attention they provide their students. Our student-faculty ratio is a low 11:1, allowing professors to get to know you personally in order to tailor your academic experience. They stretch thinking skills in ways that prepare students for success and often augment classroom theory with actual practice, bringing in valuable internships, job shadowing, and learning trips with outside experiences.
• Enrich your education in any major
with honors courses, participation in honors symposia, and travel opportunities through our popular Honors Program.
If you major in the sciences, you’ll be immersed in research in your discipline of study. For example, Restoration Ecology majors conduct field research at the 200-acre Thoreau Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Defiance is home of the Hench Autism Studies Program, an innovative, multifaceted program designed to address the late adolescent years and transition of individuals with autism to adulthood. The ASD Affinity Program supports college students with ASD in reaching their full potential.

Varying levels of academic, social, and residential support are designed to aid students in meeting their personal and professional goals.

Service learning
Defiance is consistently recognized by the prestigious President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. We are at the forefront of colleges across the country that embrace service and engagement, and we incorporate it into a Defiance College education.

We know there’s no better way to truly understand a subject than by taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it out in the real world. Whatever your major, as a student at Defiance, you can take your learning from the classroom into the community.

Defiance College is home to the nationally acclaimed McMaster School for Advancing Humanity, a program that is unique among colleges and universities across the country. McMaster gives students incredible opportunities to conduct research and service in specially designed projects at home and around the world.

Any student can apply to participate, regardless of major. For example, in a village in Belize or Panama, a student majoring in Molecular Biology can analyze water safety, a Digital Forensic Science student can instruct children on internet safety, an Education major can model teaching methods in classrooms, and a Business Administration student can help a women’s organization create a business plan to open a restaurant.

The Service Leadership Program, part of the McMaster School, is designed for students who have served and led their community in some way and want to continue that commitment at Defiance.

You can apply your academic expertise, leadership skills, and service in Project 701, a one-of-a-kind student-run nonprofit organization in which students create, develop, and run their own business or project.
