Where can you go with a degree from the Robert W. Plaster School of Business (PSB) at Missouri Southern State University? The sky is the limit!
The School of Business at MSSU works hard to create opportunities for all types of aspiring business professionals. We have a vibrant, growing, and innovative program with an emphasis on one-on-one teacher-student relationships, real-world training, entrepreneurship, and the global business environment.
The PSB is located at Missouri Southern State University, a 6,000 student, 323-acre campus in Joplin in the southwest corner of the Show-Me State. MSSU offers the safety and comfort of a smaller community while still providing students with outstanding educational opportunities. The University has 140 majors and features an annual fall “theme semester” focusing on the history and culture of another nation with a wide variety of lectures, performances, and presentations.
It is the perfect atmosphere for students to grow and learn.
Pursuing academic excellence
The School of Business gives students the chance to pursue academic excellence in Business, Management, and related studies, as well as Computer Information Science and Industrial Engineering. Our programs help prepare students and those just starting their careers to be successful business leaders and entrepreneurs.
Students at the PSB can take part in a wide range of majors, minors, and certifications to distinguish themselves. Students may choose from one of 13 majors and add a concentration in Entrepreneurship and/or select one of the many minors offered to both BSBA degree-seeking and non-BSBA degree-seeking students.
Opportunities to get involved with PSB, gain professional development, and connect with the community come through both our innovative portfolio management courses and student organizations. The School of Business also has great community resources for local businesses to start, grow, and develop in the Joplin community.
In addition to a complete list of majors, we offer two graduate degrees: the Master of Accountancy (MAcc) and Master of Science in Management.
Students in our portfolio management capstone course take a step into the real world by making portfolio recommendations for private businesses. Other students work with the Missouri Southern Foundation as financial consultants.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance major is designed to provide a quality comprehensive educational environment to students for the development of the critical, personal, professional, and intellectual competencies necessary for success in the complex and dynamic world of global business. Students learn about money and financial institutions, the process of investments, portfolio management, and financial strategies. They also study capital rationing, leverage, debt financings, stocks, leasing, mergers, and more.
Business students from Missouri Southern have taken first place for the last two years in the NASBITE International Case Study.
The Plaster School of Business also has had several top 10 national rankings in Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) and C-DECA competitions, including first place in International Accounting for the past two years.
Study abroad opportunities
The Plaster School of Business hosts its own two-week study abroad Business & Culture sojourn each year. Students have traveled to many countries, including Ghana, Italy, France, Germany, China, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Ukraine, Greece, and more. The trips allow students to study the business climate and practices of each country in depth while also learning more about the overall culture and history of each nation. The students return with a more urbane, expansive view of what business means in the United States and around the world.
You’re invited to explore our course offerings, come visit, and, if the fit is right for you, become a Missouri Southern Lion!
