“In the graduate program in Writing and Digital Communication, we focus on preparing strategic digital communicators with a broad understanding of the field and its components. From writing an article to taking a quality photo to producing a video to designing a website, the skills our students acquire prepare them to thrive in a small business environment and to lead in a large creative department or agency. The stories we tell have power, the power to create the communities we want to live in, and we strive to teach our students to wield that power wisely and well through structured service opportunities and engagement with professional associations.

“Beyond the talking points, really, we’re a small faculty, and we love our students. That’s a big thing here. It’s a really personal program. We know your name. Of course, we have a full-time career coach who works with you directly, but any one of us will do everything in our power to help you achieve your goals.”
— Dr. Shannan Palma, Founding Director of the Writing and Digital Communication Program and professor, teaching courses focusing on emerging media, global communications, transmedia, and algorithms and analytics in digital communication, among others

“My DigiComm Critical Communication course has really helped me understand the importance of agenda setting, framing, and cultivation and how these theories are used by mass media to influence our perceptions. Through my Visual Design course, my mind has been opened to the ways in which society can use color, art, and imaging to evoke emotion and spark change. This journey through the 21st Century DigiComm space has positively influenced my professional growth and personal development.”
— Crystal Perry, graduate student in Writing and Digital Communication
