McDaniel College is steeped in the tradition of education. Founded as Western Maryland College in 1867, McDaniel College has been producing well-qualified individuals with a liberal arts education since that time. The first graduate program was introduced in 1933, eventually leading to the Graduate and Professional Studies Division. Today the GPS Division houses over 20 master’s and certificate programs and serves over 1,300 graduate students. Located in the rural hills of Carroll County, Maryland, the College is located just over 30 miles northwest of Baltimore and is easily accessible from Washington DC, points of southern Pennsylvania, and Annapolis, Maryland.

Commitment to outcome-based learning
Students are engaged in their rigorous graduate work through face-to-face meetings, online course work, or off-campus cohorts that are run throughout various school districts in Maryland. Both the full-time and adjunct faculty are practitioners within their fields and bring multiple years of experience to their classrooms. In turn, they equip their students with the tools needed in order to advance their careers. Each student is connected with an advisor to help guide his or her course work, any internships, and, ultimately, the capstone experience.

Continuous education
The GPS Division is committed to providing students with opportunities to learn outside the classroom and offers a variety of workshops and conferences throughout the year. Students are not only encouraged to attend but also to engage in the events through planning and execution to gain additional knowledge and experience to bring back to their employers.

Successful alumni
Graduates of McDaniel College’s graduate programs have pursued terminal degrees in their field, earned accolades such as Teacher of the Year or Superintendent of the Year, published novels, become small business owners, are Fulbright Scholars, and pursued careers in higher education, to name a few.

Application for admission
Candidates may apply to most graduate and certificate programs in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Though each program might have unique criteria, all programs require official transcripts showing successful completion of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
