The educational leader of tomorrow requires a new kind of preparation for a new kind of world, global in scope, all-inclusive in depth and breadth, calling out for meaningful, broad-based societal change focused on harnessing the values of peace.
The Graduate School at Soka University of America strives to provide an academic setting that nurtures students from a variety of cultures and national backgrounds who seek to learn from shared experiences. The Graduate School also strives to develop critical thinking and learning and to foster a commitment to lifelong learning. To this end, the Graduate School emphasizes small class sizes that cultivate close and informal relationships between teachers and students, rigorous academic endeavors, free and open dialogue, and an appreciation for human diversity.
A new kind of preparation for a new kind of world
Soka University of America’s MA program in Educational Leadership and Societal Change examines the broad landscape of modern institutions and structures, including but not limited to schools and colleges. It casts a wide interdisciplinary net to bring new light to bear on the symbiotic relationship between value-creating educational leadership and the transformation of society itself. Embedded in the curriculum are also the practical skills and abilities, as well as the professional research tools, needed by effective educational leaders. The curriculum develops a demonstration of knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to create learning environments that value diversity, continual knowledge acquisition, instructional leadership, innovative and ethical decision-making, and the successful achievement of all school-aged youth.
In the course of their studies, students will analyze past and present models of administrative leadership for their effectiveness in promoting equality of educational opportunity and greater workplace democracy and gain foundational knowledge of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of education. Students will learn to utilize networks and coalitions for broad-based initiative and reforms in addition to promoting meaningful collaboration among and between parents and school administrators.
The difference that makes a difference
Soka’s MA program believes a good education requires a full-time commitment, with opportunities for part-time work. Our full-time learning environment provides students support for professional development opportunities, engagement with visiting distinguished scholars and practitioners in your classes, a summer research grant providing a field experience in a real-world leadership setting, and a residential living and learning experience, including off-campus housing opportunities for students with dependents or special circumstances.
Soka’s MA program is also a program that is affordable. Financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships is available up to the full cost of tuition. Loan programs are also available to domestic and international students.
