Chat with a graduate enrollment advisor or schedule a campus tour to learn more about starting something big at the UB College of Arts and Sciences.

The University at Buffalo (UB) is a nationally ranked AAU institution and the most comprehensive public research university in New York State. For over a century, the College of Arts and Sciences has served as the center of academic excellence and radical innovation at the heart of UB. Our vibrant cohort of graduate students work side-by-side with faculty experts in state-of-the-art facilities in pursuit of intellectual passion, technological advancement, and solutions to urgent global problems.

Strength and breadth
Comprising 27 departments in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics, as well as 16 special programs and 23 centers and institutes, the College is the largest and most academically diverse unit on campus. More than 450 dedicated faculty members, including 27 SUNY Distinguished Professors, prepare over 1,600 graduate students per year to become the critical thinkers and compassionate leaders so vital to our ever-evolving society.

When deciding between nearly 100 master’s and doctoral degree options, we encourage our graduate students to think beyond their undergraduate degree and follow the paths of research and discovery that most excite them. The College also offers several multidisciplinary advanced certificates, which serve to identify highly valuable applicants in an increasingly competitive job market.

Experience your education
Hands-on learning is vital to the College’s mission. These experiences amplify our students’ education and further their professional development while shaping them to become engaged and proactive citizens. Our graduate students circle the globe, conducting research on pressing issues like climate change, addiction, groundwater supply, population growth, and the refugee crisis. At home in Buffalo, students create and perform on a world-class stage, embraced by a city that has long-championed artistic experimentation. UB also hosts some of the most brilliant minds in recent history; distinguished visitors to our campus include Malala Yousafzai, Margaret Atwood, Bill Nye, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Barack Obama.

Success that shows
When our students succeed, they change the world. From high-level posts with corporations like Google and Twitter to tenure-track positions at leading educational institutions to nonprofit work in sustainability, preservation, arts and culture, and digital scholarship, the diversity of opportunity is boundless.

Global support network
College alumni number over 100,000 members, a massive network composed of internationally recognized researchers, scientists, and educators; pioneering business leaders; prominent writers and journalists; celebrated musicians and composers; and award-winning film directors, actors, artists, and designers. Each new graduating class benefits from this tremendous legacy and the influential connections of their alumni peers.

City of Good Neighbors
Spread across three beautiful campuses, UB has always formed a major part of Buffalo’s backbone. With a low cost of living and community resources like the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Shea’s Performing Arts Center, and the recently renovated Canalside recreation area, plus easy access to Niagara Falls and Toronto, the City of Good Neighbors is an ideal place to call home.

Your place is here
At the College of Arts and Sciences, we recognize that our graduate students are among the most dedicated, hard-working, and talented individuals on any university campus, and we know that game changers and world builders walk among us. In return for your commitment, here is ours: to the best of our ability, we will provide you with the faculty, resources, and support you require to complete your degree and achieve success on your terms.
