Generally, science can be divided into biology, chemistry, and physics. I believe that there are five key aspects to consider when pursuing a career in the science field.
Understanding science depends on the scientific method
I remember being so proud of the projects that I presented in college. I am so thankful that my teachers and professors helped me through the scientific method, which helped me to understand the results of the experiments in my projects.
Science is more than merely observing--you engage in the process of testing a theory, discovering new information, and applying the information to a situation. Thus, the scientific method helps you to develop critical thinking skills that you will use in future college courses and in your career.
Science requires active participation
In reflection over my undergraduate degree program in biological sciences, my success in my science courses depended on participating in lab activities and writing out equations or processes.
You will be most successful in your science courses in college when you are actively involved in learning the material and applying the concepts. You will discover very quickly that your professors will present a large amount of information. The expectation is for you to retain the information and be able to perform well on your exams.
Science is necessary in all aspects of life
In high school, I tried to make science relevant to me with one of my hobbies, cooking, which has helped me to under the role of science in my life.
Every aspect of life uses or requires science in some way. Before I entered high school, I didn’t want to take science courses because I was bored and didn’t truly understand the role of science in daily living. Examples of science at work in your life include eating breakfast in the morning, getting dressed, driving or taking the bus to school, and going to the mall with your friends –all would be impossible without science.
Understanding science can be beneficial in solving problems
I feel better after a cold or the flu when I take medication, which is effective due to years of research. There are many complex issues in our world that were resolved with the use of science. For example, polio, a debilitating disease that caused havoc in the lives of millions, has essentially been eradicated due to scientific research and collaborations among scientists.
Science improves the world around us
I was surprised to learn in one of my public health courses that the majority of our food is imported, which opens up the doors for risks to my health and everyone else in the nation.
Our food is safe based in part because of the efforts of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) working with agricultural scientists and researchers.
A career in the science field can be challenging, yet rewarding, because of the many opportunities to make further advancements in the world. Take a step today towards the career of your dreams.
