International College Application Do's and Don'ts

Don't forget to check out these reminders for your college application!

Do...

  • meet deadlines! Because international mail can move slowly, send documents at least three weeks before the deadline—earlier if possible.
  • make sure your full name, address, and contact information are at the top of every page of your application (and your name should appear exactly the same on all parts of the application and test reports too).
  • keep copies of everything you submit, and encourage anyone who writes your recommendations to do the same.
  • pay the application fee in U.S. dollars drawn from a U.S. bank or use an international money order in U.S. dollars. Some schools will also accept payment by credit card.
  • apply online if possible. Most schools tend to waive or reduce application fees if
  • completed electronically.
  • remember that recommendations not written in English should also be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  • use the Common Application if you can (commonapp.org). You can fill out only one application, which can be submitted to over 300 universities and colleges. Just be aware that some institutions may require supplemental materials.

Don’t...

  • mix and match different forms of applications. If you start electronically, complete the entire application electronically.
  • forget to check errors. (Check and double check!)
  • exaggerate your academic record, your involvement in other activities, or other
  • credentials.
  • send photocopies of awards. A list of awards is the best way to tell an admission office about your accomplishments.
  • ask people to write your recommendations unless they know you very well.

CollegeXpress has helped me look at colleges that fit my interests by taking my profile and matching it to colleges that have the programs I'm looking for. It has the ability to connect me to colleges so I can be contacted by them and look at them more in-depth to find what's right for me. Additionally, the scholarship database is super beneficial for getting scholarships for college. Not only does it help lift the financial burden of college but it shows all the opportunities available. Overall, CollegeXpress has been very helpful to me.

As a UK student moving to California due to my dad's job in the military, when I first signed up for CollegeXpress a few months ago, the college process ahead seemed daunting and incredibly stressful. That all changed after I started to explore what this website had to offer. Not only was I helped by the vast array of resources available to me, but through being a CollegeXpress member, there have been so many more benefits. There have been emails with college tips—all of which I found incredibly helpful—as well as invitations to events and notifications of scholarships that'll make college possible for me. Overall, I'm very grateful to CollegeXpress for all of these things and more. Not only have they helped me grow my understanding of the college process, but they've also helped me to grow as a person, giving me new skills that I can take with me through life.

This whole website has helped me overcome the attitude I had before. I was scared to even approach the thought of college because it was so much. I knew it wasn’t just a few easy steps, and I panicked mostly, instead of actually trying. Without realizing it, CollegeXpress did exactly what I usually do when I panic, which is take it one step at a time. With college I forget that because it’s more than just a small to-do list, but this website was really helpful and overall amazing. So thank you!

I love the site CollegeXpress; it has been very helpful finding colleges and getting them to send me information. It has also been very, very helpful with finding tons of scholarships. Also, I told many of my friends about it and they love it as well!

CollegeXpress has helped me find so many scholarships that fit me. They match me to colleges I have specific interest in to make searching for colleges way easier and more efficient. CollegeXpress refers me to schools that have my major of interest and backup schools if I want to change my mind. CollegeXpress also gives out their own scholarships, so you have even more of a chance at gaining multiple scholarships. This website has helped me de-stress from the pressure of not being able to afford college, [of finding] what schools are right for me, and how to find easy access to scholarships that most people never knew existed.
