Charter Oak State College, founded in 1973, is Connecticut's public virtual college that is designed to provide adults with an alternative means to earn an associate or bachelor's degree. Academic credit may be awarded for course work completed successfully through Charter Oak's online courses or at other regionally accredited institutions. Additional ways to earn credits are through academic instruction sponsored by non-collegiate organizations, military training evaluations, independent study, testing, portfolio assessment, and contract learning.
