A tradition of academic excellence
As a private, coeducational Catholic university located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Innovation District—which features institutions of higher learning, health care facilities, and high-tech companies—Carlow believes in nurturing the creativity, diversity, talent, and skills of its students. Student success is accomplished through a tradition of academic excellence coupled with care for each student as an individual, which doesn’t end in the classroom or an internship.
A commitment to social justice
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1929, Carlow University reflects that heritage with a strong commitment to social justice, which is introduced early in the first year on Mercy Service Day, a day where Catholic social teaching is put into action and students work for nonprofits throughout the community. Through such initiatives, Carlow instills the desire to become ethical and responsible leaders committed to a just and merciful world in students and alumni. This is a hallmark of a Carlow education, encouraging students to demonstrate forward thinking, practice social responsibility, and offer service that makes a meaningful impact to the community.
A place for you
Award-winning faculty in each of the colleges are exceptionally dedicated teachers and advisors who are active in their respective fields. With a 12:1 undergraduate student-faculty ratio, they provide a personalized educational experience that will inspire and support each student.
Through partnerships with the region’s largest medical providers and with state-of-the-art simulation labs, Carlow students have an opportunity to be on the front lines of health care. Students majoring in Nursing have achieved a perfect pass rate on the NCLEX licensing exam for two years in a row.
Carlow also boasts one of the only Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) programs, which prepares students to monitor certain vital signs of patients having brain or spinal surgeries. Similarly, Carlow’s Perfusion program teaches students to monitor patients having open-heart surgery.
Carlow students can make a difference in the world through majors in Psychology, Social Work, Communication, Criminology, and Forensic Accounting, where they build and apply knowledge that promotes social justice for vulnerable populations.
Carlow’s liberal arts curriculum helps students develop a broad perspective on life and fosters understanding through majors in Education, Art, Art Therapy, Biology, Chemistry, and—new in the fall of 2019—Data Analytics.
