Selection is based upon scholarly and professional quality, the applicant's contribution to a better understanding of Japanese culture, arts, language, and society, and to the promotion of cultural relations between Japan and the world. Applicant must have sufficient proficiency in Japanese to pursue research in Japan. Three letters of reference, an evaluation of Japanese-language ability, and academic transcripts required. Applicant should contact the Japan Foundation New York office in September.

Award Coverage
Recipients receive 310,000 yen per month with additional allowances for accompanying dependents, health insurance, and academic fees totaling a maximum of 140,000 yen per month. Round-trip airfare as well as one-time allowances are provided for settling in/departure costs and research expenses.
