Higher purpose. Greater good.
At Saint Louis University, the School of Education focuses on shaping "minds, hearts, and spirits." Grounded in the Jesuit mission of social justice, the University prepares you to be an advocate for your students and a transformational force in your community. Here, you aren't just earning a degree; you are joining a 100-year legacy of educators dedicated to the common good.
Experience that begins on day one
The academic approach at the College is built on the belief that the best way to learn teaching is to actually teach. Unlike many programs that wait until junior year to put you in a classroom, the University gets you into local schools during your very first semester. You can choose from concentrations in early childhood, elementary, middle school, secondary, or special education. Small class sizes ensure you have a tight-knit community of faculty mentors who guide you through a year-long internship, ensuring you are fully prepared for your first professional role.
A community focused on change
Student life for education majors is defined by a shared sense of purpose. Because the University is located in the heart of St. Louis, you have the unique opportunity to work within diverse urban and suburban school settings. You might join the Billiken Teacher Corps or participate in Teacher Learning Communities (TLCs) where you collaborate with peers to solve real-world educational challenges. This environment encourages you to practice "cura personalis"—care for the whole person—as you support both your fellow students and the children you teach.
The grow your own teachers program
The University is deeply committed to strengthening local schools through the Grow Your Own Teachers program. This initiative partners with local school districts to identify high school students who are passionate about returning to their home communities to teach. If selected, you can receive generous scholarship packages and dedicated community support throughout your time at the College. Upon graduation and certification, you become a preferred applicant for a teaching position within your home district, creating a direct path from your own education to your professional career.
