Mercyhurst University is a comprehensive, private Catholic university located in Erie, Pennsylvania—the state’s only Great Lakes city. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1926, the University is situated on a beautiful 75-acre expanse on a hill overlooking the city.
Academic excellence and hands-on experience
At Mercyhurst you’ll learn more about yourself, about others, and about the world. Mercyhurst is a leader in applied liberal arts higher education, integrating excellence in the liberal arts with professional programs and service to regional and world communities. The University educates young men and women in an environment where faith and reason flourish together, where the beauty and power of the liberal arts combine with the appreciation of the dignity of work and a commitment to serving others.
Mercyhurst offers more than 50 undergraduate majors, with more than 70 minors, concentrations, and pre-professional tracks as well as more than 20 graduate degree and certificate programs. Many of our academic programs enjoy national recognition, including Intelligence Studies, Anthropology/Archaeology, Applied Forensic Sciences, Public Health, Hospitality Management, and Dance. The Applied Forensic Sciences Department is one of the only programs in the country to provide students with opportunities to work with real evidence and human remains. Our Intelligence Studies program, the first non-government initiative of its kind, prepares students to become intelligence analysts ready to meet the security and business demands of the 21st-century environment. Many students secure internships with federal agencies and global businesses, and our grads are highly coveted among Fortune 500 corporations and DC Beltway institutions.
Mercyhurst is known for its pioneering approach to higher education, combining time-honored academic traditions with cutting-edge innovations in technology—such as our DNA sequencing lab and our multimedia communications center—to enhance student learning. Many of our professors are recognized experts in their fields, and all are devoted to undergraduate teaching and collaborative research. Faculty—not graduate or teaching assistants—teach all courses at Mercyhurst, and as early as freshman year, you’ll have opportunities to work alongside faculty on cross-disciplinary research and projects.
Mercyhurst’s vibrant student life community affords students the opportunity to get involved outside the classroom the moment they arrive. The University offers a range of performing arts groups and varsity and intramural athletics, as well as more than 80 Recognized Student Clubs and Organizations on campus, including
Amnesty International, Black Students for Unity, Equestrian Club, LGBTQIA Equality Club, Marching Band, Merciad (student newspaper), Student Government, and many more.
Mercyhurst offers 24 athletic programs, including two NCAA Division I sports in men’s and women’s ice hockey, and 22 Division II sports. Our teams compete at a high level, so there’s almost always a big game—or even a championship—to get excited about. In the 2015–2016 season alone, our baseball team won the PSAC Western Division championship and set a program record for wins in a season; men’s basketball claimed the PSAC Tournament championship; and women’s ice hockey won its 16th-consecutive College Hockey America regular-season championship and won the CHA Tournament Championship, just to name a few.
Mercyhurst graduates have been very successful in securing employment in their respective fields. In recent years 95% of our graduates have gained employment or been accepted into graduate, medical, or professional schools within a year of graduation. More than 19,000 Mercyhurst alumni reside in all 50 states and in 15 countries across the globe. Our network of graduates includes the finest business leaders, teachers, doctors, lawyers, police officers, FBI and CIA analysts, dancers, musicians, artists, and more.
