Central Washington University's (CWU) Department of Art + Design is an exciting place for aspiring visual artists and designers to develop their unique voices. Offering comprehensive undergraduate programs like the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Art, the professional Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art, and the BFA in Graphic Design, CWU provides intensive hands-on training and a supportive, close-knit community. With dedicated faculty who are practicing artists and scholars, the University is focused on helping students build a strong portfolio and prepare for a creative career. 

Intensive studio practice
The core of the CWU visual arts experience is an emphasis on studio practice. Whether you choose to focus on traditional fine arts or contemporary graphic design, you will work across a wide range of mediums. Studio Art majors can specialize in areas like Ceramics, Drawing, Jewelry/Metals, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Wood Design. The BFA in Graphic Design is a career-focused program covering everything from typography and branding to UX/UI design. All programs are structured to give you a foundational understanding of art history and critical thinking, which guides your creative process and helps you contextualize your work.

Student life and exhibition opportunities
With a wide array of majors and minors, the Department of Art + Design fosters a vibrant and collaborative artist community. Student life revolves around making and showcasing work. Students can share their talent and build their professional résumés by participating in annual events like the juried undergraduate exhibit held in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery. The gallery also hosts exhibitions by faculty and visiting artists, providing direct exposure to contemporary art and design trends and connecting students with professionals in the field.

Specializing in unique media
CWU offers highly specialized studio areas, giving students unique skills that can set them apart. The program’s dedication to a variety of physical media, including Jewelry and Metalsmithing and Wood Design, ensures graduates have a robust set of craft and technical abilities. Students benefit from specialized studios for each medium, providing the space and tools needed for intensive and advanced work. These facilities and the ability to work in traditional and digital fabrication methods make the studio art experience comprehensive and career-ready.

Our main campus in Ellensburg, Washington, is the thriving center of our University family with residential housing, sprawling grounds, and extensive academic and campus life activities. CWU also comprises eight University Centers and Sites across the state, providing degree and certification options closer to home for students who may not be able to attend the traditional campus.
