College Planning Calendar: August 2023

As we near a new academic year, it's time to determine a plan of action for you and your students. Use our August College Planning Calendar to get started!

August means it’s almost time for students and counselors to head back to school for another academic year. Seniors are about to start the college admission process, juniors have upcoming AP classes and standardized tests, sophomores will work to find their high school niche, and ninth graders are embarking on a brand-new journey. The end of the summer is the perfect time to set a solid college prep plan for student success over the next nine months. Start planning now with monthly to-do’s, important deadlines, holidays, and more.

General college prep and planning

  • 9th grade: It’s almost time for an exciting new high school adventure! Ensure students are prepared with Our Best Advice for Your First Year of High School, covering everything from extracurriculars to grades to early college prep and more.
  • 10th grade: Sophomores can also prepare for the upcoming year with their own survival guide, Our Best Advice for Sophomore Year of High School, featuring tips on avoiding the sophomore slump, studying for the PSAT, starting the scholarship search, and more.
  • 11th grade: Junior year is when the college process starts to feel real. To help students start thinking about standardized tests, brainstorming college essays, and formulating a list of colleges they’d like to visit and apply to next fall, share Our Best Advice for Junior Year of High School.
  • 12th grade: This is it—the last year of high school and when your students will hopefully make it into their dream colleges! Our Best Advice for Senior Year of High School walks students through applications, essays, scholarships, standardized tests, and so much more to help them prepare for their next academic journey.

Month-long observances and events

  • National Family Fun Month: Before getting too wrapped up in back-to-school planning, students should take some time to have fun with their families before everyone gets busy again.
  • National Back to School Month: We’ve already been talking about it—but August is officially National Back to School Month! It’s the perfect time for students to start getting ready for a new academic year and all the excitement and challenges ahead.

CollegeXpress has helped me explore my views on college in that "why do I wanna go to a certain school" way. It’s helped me explore the best fits in all of these outstanding choices. All these college admission counselors can access my accolades showing them how I could help their college. This source of information helps me show these admission directors who I am and what I'm interested in. Thanks to this platform, my experience for education will be better than most, and I'm so grateful for all that it has provided for me.

CollegeXpress helped me gain interest in many colleges/universities and many scholarships. I would say the most helpful thing CollegeXpress has done for me is sending me emails that tell me certain types of colleges are interested in me as well as emails about scholarships that I can look at and possibly apply for.

CollegeXpress helped me find Allegheny College with the super-user-friendly search tool for both schools and scholarships. Using CollegeXpress, I was able to search for programs I was interested in studying and find colleges that offered those programs. Also, once you search for the college, CollegeXpress can get you connected!

I had absolutely no idea where I wanted to go to school; I was considering colleges in almost every state. CollegeXpress was an amazing resource and helped me compare all of my top schools. Without the help of CollegeXpress, I probably wouldn't have made such an informed and confident decision.

I've used CollegeXpress quite a bit as a senior, particularly for colleges and scholarships, so it's been a very big asset in that respect! I would recommend it to anyone looking to pursue a college education, especially seniors! This scholarship will help me achieve my goals in ways I couldn't have before, and I know that there are opportunities like that for everyone on the website and in the magazines!
