Showing Counselors Appreciation for National School Counseling Week

It's National School Counseling Week! We asked students in the CollegeXpress community what they appreciate about their school counselor, and here are some of the amazing responses.

It’s National School Counseling Week! Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association, this appreciation week was created to highlight the hard work and impact school counselors have in helping students like you succeed in school and plan for the future. From assisting with admission essays to helping with the college search and everything in between, what would we do without our school counselors?

In early January, we asked students to complete a quick survey about their experiences with their school counselors and if they had one in particular they wanted to shout-out to thank for all their hard work. We received over 250 responses praising their counselors! Here are a few of the incredible comments from students about how much their counselors have impacted their lives.

Counselor shout-outs

“Mrs. Johnson gives so much of her time all year round to make sure students get the schedules they want, and she makes her schedule flexible to set up meetings with her.” — Salem High School, GA

“I appreciate Mrs. Welch because she’s an amazing counselor. She always has my back, and she works so hard to get me and my fellow classmates to graduate so I feel that it is only right that I can help her out too. She spends so many hours making sure I’m passing and that I’m going to get through college without loans or debt, and she is giving me a great future. She is truly a great person.” — Ridgeview High School, FL

“Day in and day out, she has teachers and staff swarming her office for a range of reasons, and she somehow always manages to put together a school class schedule that fits as many students' needs as possible. Not only does she do her job well, but she also volunteers her time for the school district as well! She is the head of our school's National Honor Society chapter and volunteers in the youth basketball program. She does so much else that I cannot even keep track of it all!” — North Mac High School, IL

“When I was diagnosed with cancer, he helped me make all my teachers aware of the situation, my surgery dates, and how long I may be out, and he helped me get any absences excused I needed. All in all, he’s been very helpful and very relieving of any stress I may have that involves school.” — Waterford Kettering High School, MI

“Your goofiness and encouragement are the best part of my day. I admire how you deeply care for each and every one of your students and want to help them accomplish everything they set their mind to.” — St. Patrick Catholic High School, MS

“Mrs. O’Malley is so intelligent and tries her hardest to make everything work for everyone. She is a master at moving classes around so the most classes can fit in a schedule possible, and when students need help, she always makes time for them!” — Yutan High School, NE

“Mrs. Parreco was constantly checking up on me, asking me about my day, asking me how I was feeling, and she has truly helped me to learn and acknowledge that there are people who care so much about you. I'm truly thankful for her because she took time out of her days to consolidate, care, and just listen to me when I desperately needed it.” — Rossview High School, TN

“I would definitely like to shout-out Mrs. Bailey at Lake Fenton High School in Linden, Michigan. Again, she's the best. She's been a huge help in getting me into more art classes while still scheduling me into all the other required classes in order to graduate. She is very understanding. If I was put into a class that I really didn't want, she would work with me to get me into a class that was a better fit for me. I can't say enough how much I appreciate her and everything she has done for me in my high school years.” — Lake Fenton High School, MI

“He noticed any problems and contacted me before I even had the chance to tell him I needed his help.” — Shenendehowa High School, NY

“I would like to shout-out Mr. Erickson because he first started out as a physics teacher at my school and then transitioned into a college counselor role where he was able to adapt and support all grades in getting prepared for college. He has worked so hard for each student he helps, looking for colleges that may spark interest in a student's mind, pushing students to do the best work they can to give them the best chance of getting into their dream college, and giving support for those who he is not required to help.” — DSST Green Valley Ranch High School, CO

“She always has a wonderful and bright spirit. Every time I walk into her office, I feel a burst of good energy that pushes me to want to do more.” — Ramona High School, CA

“Thank you, Mrs. Schneider, for being someone I can go to for anything and trust. You have been there for me through my toughest problems and freaking out about college. You are someone I look up to and respect because you show how the world should treat others through any situation.” — Branson High School, MO

Thank you to all the school counselors out there, and enjoy your week!

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships to apply for and look into more colleges. While there are many websites similar to CollegeXpress, every website is different, and I've found a lot of good insight on this website. Receiving emails from CollegeXpress about scholarships is extremely useful, and getting insight about colleges near, far, and anywhere in between helps me narrow down my choices to what I want, which is also super helpful. The articles are always really good reads, and I can't stress enough how helpful this website has been to me. Anything related to college is beneficial to me as a senior, and I have learned lots of useful things to help me on my college journey this year.

This whole website has helped me overcome the attitude I had before. I was scared to even approach the thought of college because it was so much. I knew it wasn’t just a few easy steps, and I panicked mostly, instead of actually trying. Without realizing it, CollegeXpress did exactly what I usually do when I panic, which is take it one step at a time. With college I forget that because it’s more than just a small to-do list, but this website was really helpful and overall amazing. So thank you!

CollegeXpress has helped me tremendously in my college search in narrowing down the schools I’m interested in. Using the college search tool, I was able to narrow down my choices to schools that matched what I was looking for. I also used CollegeXpress for their scholarship search, which helped me find scholarships that I meet the requirements of.

$10,000 Scholarship Winner, 2021

I first discovered CollegeXpress during my sophomore year of high school while researching colleges that interested me. My SAT prep class the following year further familiarized me with the opportunities available through the organization. CX has personally helped me by exposing me to a diverse selection of schools as well as scholarships and life tips that have provided valuable guidance in my college search.

This scholarship will help me adjust to college life without worrying as much about tuition. This gives me more room to truly explore and benefit from all aspects of higher education. I plan to study Conservation Biology and work protecting species/ecosystems. I’m looking forward to getting field experience and seeing firsthand the problems research is solving.
