College is the perfect time in your life for exploring the world outside of your friends, perspectives, and culture. A great way to expand your college experience is to study in another country. You can take a wide variety of classes, including foreign language, history, and science. Keep in mind that you aren’t limited to courses for your major. Participating in study abroad programs can be difficult because of demanding college schedules, but you can take advantage of these programs with proper planning.

  • Start early: Planning as early as your first year is recommended so you can figure out how you'll cover the costs of the program, which include transportation, living arrangements, courses, books, food, and entertainment. Many students use loans in addition to scholarships and grants. Attend the study abroad fair at your college and go to the study abroad office for more information to start planning!
  • Get advice: Meet with your advisor to discuss available study abroad programs. They will provide guidance on courses and programs that would suit your interests. Most importantly, you want to make sure you stay on track with completing your degree.
  • Consider summer programs: Summer-intensive programs may be a better choice for you than semester or quarter programs. Taking courses abroad may not be possible with a packed fall or spring term. However, summer programs tend to be shorter and more intense, which may be more suitable for your schedule.
  • Explore outside opportunities: There may not be a study abroad program at your school that fits your interests. The good news is that many outside organizations help students study abroad as well. Try researching organizations and even other schools that offer study abroad opportunities, but ensure these courses and credits will be accepted at your college.
