7 Unique Majors and the Schools That Offer Them

Just because everyone else is majoring in Business or Science doesn't mean you have to. Check out these seven unique majors because one may be your perfect fit!

Chances are, most colleges you’re looking into have the same majors as many of their competitors. For instance, programs in Engineering, English, Psychology, Chemistry, and Biology are likely what your colleges of interest’s websites and mailing flyers are advertising the most. While these majors are great for students who are interested in those areas, how does someone approach choosing a major if none of these fields fascinate them? The answer: Keep searching.

Many colleges offer more than these typical majors, but you may have to do a little digging because they’re not as well known. Luckily, we’ve done some of the work for you to jump-start the process. Here are our top picks for the most unique college majors of 2020 and where to find them, just to get you thinking:

1. Auctioneering

Have you ever attended an auction or turned on the television to hear the auctioneer talking really, really fast? Talk about an effective communicator! The job of an auctioneer involves selling property and other objects to the public, where the auctioneer awards the item to the highest bidder. You may thrive as an auctioneer if you enjoy public speaking, love to travel, and want to work for yourself—as most auctioneers are independent contractors, meaning they’re self-employed and work on a fee-for-service basis.

2. Floral Management & Design

If you’ve ever received a bouquet of flowers as a token of appreciation, you’re likely familiar with the term “warm fuzzies.” Giving flowers is a small deed that makes a world of difference in someone’s day. With a degree in Floral Management, you’ll learn how to manage a floral business—whether in-store, at events, or online. You may enjoy working as a floral manager if you have a dream to open up your own business or run someone else’s business, you find flowers make life a little brighter, and you enjoy gardening.

3. Footwear Design & Development

High heels, flats, sneakers—a high-heeled sneaker, perhaps. The sky’s the limit when you’re designing shoes. A Footwear Design & Development major allows students to design a shoe line and learn how to market and collaborate with other shoe companies. You may enjoy working as a footwear designer if you love fashion or have a passion for protecting feet.

4. Toy Design

Do you feel like a kid at heart? Do you really enjoy skimming through the toy aisle at Target? If you find that toys still bring a joy to your life—whether through giving toys to children in your family at Christmas or purchasing that new Lego set for yourself—a Toy Design major may be just the fit for you.

5. Farrier Science

If you want to open a business and be self-employed, you may want to consider a unique business that eliminates your competition. With an associate degree in Farrier Science, students learn how to start a business working with horses, particularly related to properly trimming, shoeing, welding, and forging. If you have a love for horses, this may be a unique opportunity to look into.

6. Theme Park and Attraction Management

Do you love Disney World and Universal Studios? Have you ever had a dream to manage one of these types of parks (or maybe you do now since this made you realize that’s a possibility)? As part of a Hospitality Management major, a Theme Park and Attraction Management track teaches students how to manage risk, manage employees, develop products, and manage operation issues in theme parks. Disney World: here you come.

If you enjoy clowning around—or perhaps you were even considered the class clown—you may enjoy the study of Physical Theater to pursue the field of work as a clown or other similar performers. Ensemble-Based Physical Theater majors allow for training in movements and becoming physically responsive as well as other aspects. Students will also study techniques of clowns and masks.

High School Class of 2021

For a long time, I've been searching everywhere to find the perfect website I can get scholarships and information from. Needless to say, I could never find the right one. That was, until I found CollegeXpress. Through my journey of finding the right scholarships for me, I was able to find articles about different things. They've all been helpful, especially in times like this! I was even able to connect with some of my favorite colleges! I love CollegeXpress. Thank you!

As I transition to furthering my education, I can say with certainty that it simply wouldn’t be possible without the help of generous organizations such as CollegeXpress. Those who initially founded CX had no idea their platform would give a plethora of information to a first-generation homeless kid native to the ghettos of over half a dozen states. Everyone at CX and Carnegie Dartlet gave me a chance at a future when the statistics said I had none. And for that, I thank them.

High School Class of 2023

Being a sophomore in high school, I never really worried about college. I thought it wasn't important to worry about until senior year. Through this program opportunity I came across, I realized how important it is to start looking at colleges early and start planning ahead. CollegeXpress has opened my eyes to what colleges require, what colleges are near me, and what they offer. The daily emails I get from CollegeXpress really help me look at the different options I have and what colleges I fit into. Without this website, I would not be taking the time out of my day to worry about what my future will be nor what opportunities I have. I could not be more grateful for such an amazing and useful website. It's thanks to CollegeXpress that not only me but my family now know how much potential I have in to getting into these colleges/universities that we thought were out of my reach.

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships to apply for and look into more colleges. While there are many websites similar to CollegeXpress, every website is different, and I've found a lot of good insight on this website. Receiving emails from CollegeXpress about scholarships is extremely useful, and getting insight about colleges near, far, and anywhere in between helps me narrow down my choices to what I want, which is also super helpful. The articles are always really good reads, and I can't stress enough how helpful this website has been to me. Anything related to college is beneficial to me as a senior, and I have learned lots of useful things to help me on my college journey this year.
