Offering intensive preprofessional training grounded in pure classical technique, Walnut Hill's five-week Summer Dance (ages 13-17) places a strong emphasis on ballet, with supplementary classes provided in pointe; variation; men's work; and jazz, modern and character dance. All classes are graded according to age, technical ability and physical strength. Dancers take a minimum of three classes each day, in addition to participating in evening rehearsals or workshops and one Saturday class. A weekly lecture or a short workshop and planned recreational events are important aspects of the program. Other options include the three-week-long Summer Youth Dance (residential and day, ages 10-13) and two weeklong junior workshops for commuting children ages 5-11.
